Access Parkour is proud to have been providing an inclusive, dynamic space for parkour, circus and other movement arts for the last 8 years at our home, Room to Move.
Thousands of people have come through our doors and left smiling, feeling accomplished, and usually a little bit sweaty.
We've had professional circus artists, nervous first-time parkour students, internationally acclaimed movement coaches, kids, parents and grandparents all find their way to our little warehouse in Leith.
We love our wee home on West Bowling Green St and the community that’s grown up around it. But it has always had its shortcomings (hello, leaky roof and limited storage). And unfortunately, our current landlords have told us that after our current lease ends in September, any new lease would be almost double the current rent. As a not-for-profit organisation, we just can't absorb that kind of massive increase in cost.
So last year we started looking for a new long-term space. Thanks to some brilliant other local organisations, we came across an amazing opportunity…
Leith St Andrew’s Parish Church, at the foot of Easter Road and the corner of Leith Links, is being sold off. We are working with some incredible partners on a community buyout of the building and grounds to give the church a new life as an active wellbeing centre that would house Access Parkour, alongside loads of other fantastic local organisations.
But this is a big project; there’s architectural and financial feasibility work, raising support from the local community, design and planning work - not to mention finding the actual funds to purchase and convert the building into a community-owned centre. It's probably going to take a couple of years to make this dream a reality.
And so, we are looking for a new home for the Room to Move community for the next few years while we work to bring Leith St Andrew's church into community ownership.
We wanted to wait until we had an interim venue confirmed before sharing this news, but unfortunately, we've had our hopes raised a few times this year, only for plans to fall through.
We still have a couple of live leads, outdoor and school classes will continue to run no matter what, and we have some back-up back-up back-up plans to make sure you can still get your parkour fix. But with just a couple of months left on our lease, we wanted to let you all know the situation. As soon as we have more news confirmed, we'll be back to tell you more!
For now, please keep booking out our classes and summer camps, coming to train at our open sessions, and generally being brilliant. And of course, if you happen to know someone with a spare warehouse in Leith for a reasonable rate, you know who to call...
